Jerusalem in Affliction

1 How lonely sits the city
That was full of people!
^(A)How like a widow is she,
Who was great among the nations!
The ^(B)princess among the provinces
Has become a ^[a]slave!

²She ^(C)weeps bitterly in the ^(D)night,
Her tears are on her cheeks;
Among all her lovers
She has none to comfort her.
All her friends have dealt treacherously with her;
They have become her enemies.

³^(E)Judah has gone into captivity,
Under affliction and hard servitude;
^(F)She dwells among the ^[b]nations,
She finds no ^(G)rest;
All her persecutors overtake her in dire straits.

⁴The roads to Zion mourn
Because no one comes to the ^[c]set feasts.
All her gates are ^(H)desolate;
Her priests sigh,
Her virgins are afflicted,
And she is in bitterness.

⁵Her adversaries ^(I)have become ^[d]the master,
Her enemies prosper;
For the Lord has afflicted her
^(J)Because of the multitude of her transgressions.
Her ^(K)children have gone into captivity before the enemy.

⁶And from the daughter of Zion
All her splendor has departed.
Her princes have become like deer
That find no pasture,
That ^[e]flee without strength
Before the pursuer.

⁷In the days of her affliction and roaming,
Jerusalem ^(L)remembers all her pleasant things
That she had in the days of old.
When her people fell into the hand of the enemy,
With no one to help her,
The adversaries saw her
And mocked at her ^[f]downfall.

⁸^(M)Jerusalem has sinned gravely,
Therefore she has become ^[g]vile.
All who honored her despise her
Because ^(N)they have seen her nakedness;
Yes, she sighs and turns away.

⁹Her uncleanness is in her skirts;
She ^(O)did not consider her destiny;
Therefore her collapse was awesome;
She had no comforter.
“O Lord, behold my affliction,
For the enemy is exalted!”

¹⁰The adversary has spread his hand
Over all her ^[h]pleasant things;
For she has seen ^(P)the nations enter her ^[i]sanctuary,
Those whom You commanded
^(Q)Not to enter Your assembly.

¹¹All her people sigh,
^(R)They ^[j]seek bread;
They have given their ^[k]valuables for food to restore life.
“See, O Lord, and consider,
For I am scorned.”

¹²“Is it nothing to you, all you who ^[l]pass by?
Behold and see
^(S)If there is any sorrow like my sorrow,
Which has been brought on me,
Which the Lord has inflicted
In the day of His fierce anger.

¹³“From above He has sent fire into my bones,
And it overpowered them;
He has ^(T)spread a net for my feet
And turned me back;
He has made me desolate
And faint all the day.

¹⁴“The^(U) yoke of my transgressions was ^[m]bound;
They were woven together by His hands,
And thrust upon my neck.
He made my strength fail;
The Lord delivered me into the hands of those whom I am not able to withstand.

Jesus Prays for Himself

17 Jesus spoke these words, lifted up His eyes to heaven, and said: “Father, ^(A)the hour has come. Glorify Your Son, that Your Son also may glorify You, ²^(B)as You have given Him authority over all flesh, that He ^[a]should give eternal life to as many ^(C)as You have given Him. ³And ^(D)this is eternal life, that they may know You, ^(E)the only true God, and Jesus Christ ^(F)whom You have sent. ⁴^(G)I have glorified You on the earth. ^(H)I have finished the work ^(I)which You have given Me to do. ⁵And now, O Father, glorify Me together ^[b]with Yourself, with the glory ^(J)which I had with You before the world was.

Jesus Prays for His Disciples

⁶^(K)“I have ^[c]manifested Your name to the men ^(L)whom You have given Me out of the world. ^(M)They were Yours, You gave them to Me, and they have kept Your word. ⁷Now they have known that all things which You have given Me are from You. ⁸For I have given to them the words ^(N)which You have given Me; and they have received them, ^(O)and have known surely that I came forth from You; and they have believed that ^(P)You sent Me.

⁹“I pray for them. ^(Q)I do not pray for the world but for those whom You have given Me, for they are Yours. ¹⁰And all Mine are Yours, and ^(R)Yours are Mine, and I am glorified in them. ¹¹^(S)Now I am no longer in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to You. Holy Father, ^(T)keep^[d] through Your name those whom You have given Me, that they may be one ^(U)as We are. ¹²While I was with them ^[e]in the world, ^(V)I kept them in ^[f]Your name. Those whom You gave Me I have kept; and ^(W)none of them is ^[g]lost ^(X)except the son of ^[h]perdition, ^(Y)that the Scripture might be fulfilled. ¹³But now I come to You, and these things I speak in the world, that they may have My joy fulfilled in themselves. ¹⁴I have given them Your word; ^(Z)and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, ^(AA)just as I am not of the world. ¹⁵I do not pray that You should take them out of the world, but ^(AB)that You should keep them from the evil one. ¹⁶They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. ¹⁷^(AC)Sanctify^[i] them by Your truth. ^(AD)Your word is truth. ¹⁸^(AE)As You sent Me into the world, I also have sent them into the world. ¹⁹And ^(AF)for their sakes I sanctify Myself, that they also may be sanctified by the truth.

²⁰“I do not pray for these alone, but also for those who ^[j]will believe in Me through their word; ²¹^(AG)that they all may be one, as ^(AH)You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me. ²²And the ^(AI)glory which You gave Me I have given them, ^(AJ)that they may be one just as We are one: ²³I in them, and You in Me; ^(AK)that they may be made perfect in one, and that the world may know that You have sent Me, and have loved them as You have loved Me.

²⁴^(AL)“Father, I desire that they also whom You gave Me may be with Me where I am, that they may behold My glory which You have given Me; ^(AM)for You loved Me before the foundation of the world. ²⁵O righteous Father! ^(AN)The world has not known You, but ^(AO)I have known You; and ^(AP)these have known that You sent Me. ²⁶^(AQ)And I have declared to them Your name, and will declare it, that the love ^(AR)with which You loved Me may be in them, and I in them.”

The Prophet’s Anguish and Hope

3 I am the man who has seen affliction by the rod of His wrath.
²He has led me and made me walk
In darkness and not in light.
³Surely He has turned His hand against me
Time and time again throughout the day.

⁴He has aged ^(A)my flesh and my skin,
And ^(B)broken my bones.
⁵He has besieged me
And surrounded me with bitterness and ^[a]woe.
⁶^(C)He has set me in dark places
Like the dead of long ago.

⁷^(D)He has hedged me in so that I cannot get out;
He has made my chain heavy.
⁸Even ^(E)when I cry and shout,
He shuts out my prayer.
⁹He has blocked my ways with hewn stone;
He has made my paths crooked.

¹⁰^(F)He has been to me a bear lying in wait,

²⁵The Lord is good to those who ^(V)wait for Him,
To the soul who seeks Him.
²⁶It is good that one should ^(W)hope ^(X)and wait quietly
For the salvation of the Lord.

The yoke in his youth.

Because God has laid it on him;

John 13:1-35

Jesus Washes the Disciples’ Feet

13 Now ^(A)before the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that ^(B)His hour had come that He should depart from this world to the Father, having loved His own who were in the world, He ^(C)loved them to the end.

²And ^[a]supper being ended, ^(D)the devil having already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, to betray Him, ³Jesus, knowing ^(E)that the Father had given all things into His hands, and that He ^(F)had come from God and ^(G)was going to God, ⁴^(H)rose from supper and laid aside His garments, took a towel and girded Himself. ⁵After that, He poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet, and to wipe them with the towel with which He was girded. ⁶Then He came to Simon Peter. And Peter said to Him, ^(I)“Lord, are You washing my feet?”

⁷Jesus answered and said to him, “What I am doing you ^(J)do not understand now, ^(K)but you will know after this.”

⁸Peter said to Him, “You shall never wash my feet!”

Jesus answered him, ^(L)“If I do not wash you, you have no part with Me.”

⁹Simon Peter said to Him, “Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head!”

¹⁰Jesus said to him, “He who is bathed needs only to wash his feet, but is completely clean; and ^(M)you are clean, but not all of you.” ¹¹For ^(N)He knew who would betray Him; therefore He said, “You are not all clean.”

¹²So when He had washed their feet, taken His garments, and sat down again, He said to them, “Do you ^[b]know what I have done to you? ¹³^(O)You call Me Teacher and Lord, and you say well, for so I am. ¹⁴^(P)If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, ^(Q)you also ought to wash one another’s feet. ¹⁵For ^(R)I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you. ¹⁶^(S)Most assuredly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master; nor is he who is sent greater than he who sent him. ¹⁷^(T)If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.

Jesus Identifies His Betrayer^(U)

¹⁸“I do not speak concerning all of you. I know whom I have chosen; but that the ^(V)Scripture may be fulfilled, ^(W)‘He who eats ^[c]bread with Me has lifted up his heel against Me.’ ¹⁹^(X)Now I tell you before it comes, that when it does come to pass, you may believe that I am He. ²⁰^(Y)Most assuredly, I say to you, he who receives whomever I send receives Me; and he who receives Me receives Him who sent Me.”

²¹^(Z)When Jesus had said these things, ^(AA)He was troubled in spirit, and testified and said, “Most assuredly, I say to you, ^(AB)one of you will betray Me.” ²²Then the disciples looked at one another, perplexed about whom He spoke.

²³Now ^(AC)there was ^[d]leaning on Jesus’ bosom one of His disciples, whom Jesus loved. ²⁴Simon Peter therefore motioned to him to ask who it was of whom He spoke.

²⁵Then, leaning ^[e]back on Jesus’ breast, he said to Him, “Lord, who is it?”

²⁶Jesus answered, “It is he to whom I shall give a piece of bread when I have dipped it.” And having dipped the bread, He gave it to ^(AD)Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon. ²⁷^(AE)Now after the piece of bread, Satan entered him. Then Jesus said to him, “What you do, do quickly.” ²⁸But no one at the table knew for what reason He said this to him. ²⁹For some thought, because ^(AF)Judas had the money box, that Jesus had said to him, “Buy those things we need for the feast,” or that he should give something to the poor.

³⁰Having received the piece of bread, he then went out immediately. And it was night.

The New Commandment

³¹So, when he had gone out, Jesus said, ^(AG)“Now the Son of Man is glorified, and ^(AH)God is glorified in Him. ³²If God is glorified in Him, God will also glorify Him in Himself, and ^(AI)glorify Him immediately. ³³Little children, I shall be with you a ^(AJ)little while longer. You will seek Me; ^(AK)and as I said to the Jews, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come,’ so now I say to you. ³⁴^(AL)A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. ³⁵^(AM)By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”
